What's Happening?
Cedar Crest College in Allentown is set to begin renovations for the Elaine & John Harmon Center for Leadership in Technology, with a ceremony scheduled for June 16. The project is funded by a gift from the estate of alumna Elaine Oberkotter Harmon and
her husband, John. The center aims to equip students with technology skills while fostering leadership, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making. It will collaborate with local businesses on technology strategy and has already established new undergraduate majors in Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Computer Science, along with Applied AI integration. These programs are available to both traditional undergraduate students and learners in the coeducational School of Adult and Graduate Education.
Why It's Important?
The renovation of the Harmon Center is crucial as it addresses the growing demand for technology skills in the workforce. By offering new majors in high-demand fields such as Cybersecurity and Data Science, Cedar Crest College is positioning itself as a leader in technology education. This initiative not only benefits students by providing them with relevant skills but also supports local businesses by addressing skills gaps in the Lehigh Valley. The collaboration between the college and industry leaders is expected to enhance workforce readiness and contribute to regional economic development.
What's Next?
As the renovations proceed, Cedar Crest College will likely continue to expand its partnerships with local businesses and organizations to ensure that its programs remain aligned with industry needs. The college may also explore additional funding opportunities to further enhance its technology education offerings. The success of the Harmon Center could serve as a model for other institutions seeking to integrate technology and leadership education.
