What's Happening?
NKT, a Danish cable manufacturer, has secured contracts with SSEN Transmission to deliver two high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission links in Scotland. Announced on January 19, the contracts are valued at approximately €2 billion, marking the largest
contract award in SSEN Transmission's history. These projects are part of SSEN Transmission's 'Pathway to 2030' investment program aimed at upgrading electricity transmission infrastructure in northern Scotland. NKT will provide turnkey 525-kV HVDC power cable systems for the Western Isles and Spittal to Peterhead transmission links. The Western Isles link will span about 170 kilometers with a capacity of 1.8 GW, while the Spittal to Peterhead connection will cover roughly 210 kilometers, delivering 2.0 GW of capacity. Both projects are expected to be operational by 2030.
