What's Happening?
At the 2026 Partner Forum hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Laboratory of the Rockies, industry leaders, academics, and government officials gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities in building a domestic supply chain for
critical minerals. Greg Bowman, chief global policy officer for USA Rare Earth Inc., emphasized the importance of these minerals, which are essential for modern electronics and defense technologies. Currently, over 80% of the U.S.'s critical minerals are imported, creating supply vulnerabilities. The forum focused on strategies to develop a reliable domestic supply chain, including mining, refining, and recycling efforts, as well as the need for collaboration across sectors.
Why It's Important?
The reliance on foreign sources for critical minerals poses significant risks to the U.S. economy and national security. These minerals are vital for the production of electronics, medical imaging, and defense technologies. A domestic supply chain would reduce dependency on imports, stabilize prices, and ensure a steady supply of these essential materials. The forum highlighted the need for innovation in mining and processing technologies, as well as the development of a skilled workforce to support the industry. Establishing a domestic supply chain could also lead to economic growth and job creation in the U.S.
What's Next?
The forum participants discussed the need for continued collaboration between industry, academia, and government to overcome the challenges of establishing a domestic supply chain. This includes investing in new technologies and processes, as well as developing educational programs to train the next generation of mineral experts. The U.S. Department of Energy is committed to supporting these efforts through initiatives like the Genesis Mission, which aims to use artificial intelligence to optimize mining and refining processes. The success of these initiatives will depend on the ability to integrate new technologies into existing systems and the willingness of stakeholders to invest in long-term solutions.
