A recent study conducted by the German Cancer Research Center has revealed that excess weight may be responsible for more than 11.5% of all cancer cases, nearly doubling previous estimates. The research analyzed health data from 458,543 participants in the UK
Biobank over a median period of nearly 12 years, during which over 50,000 new cancer cases were recorded. The study highlights that traditional measures of obesity, such as body mass index (BMI), may not accurately capture cancer risk, as they do not account for fat distribution. Instead, measures like waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, which better capture abdominal fat, were found to be more informative.
