What's Happening?
The Maryland Office of Statewide Broadband (OSB) is expanding its scope by incorporating the Maryland Digital Equity Coalition (MDEC) to better align with the state's long-term broadband goals. MDEC, established in October 2023, serves as a collaborative
network and resource hub, involving approximately 350 members from various sectors including government agencies, libraries, healthcare providers, and schools. This integration aims to strengthen efforts to provide high-speed internet access and digital skills training across Maryland. The OSB has completed 80 projects in fiscal year 2025, significantly increasing broadband access throughout the state.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the OSB is crucial for bridging the digital divide in Maryland, ensuring that all residents have equal access to internet services, which is essential for economic opportunities, education, and healthcare. By enhancing digital equity, the state aims to improve work, wages, and wealth for its residents. This move also supports the broader national agenda of increasing digital literacy and connectivity, which are vital for participating in the modern economy and accessing essential services.
What's Next?
The OSB will continue to partner with public and private organizations to further expand internet access and digital literacy initiatives. The integration with MDEC is expected to facilitate more comprehensive and coordinated efforts in achieving the state's digital equity goals. Future projects may focus on increasing the availability of devices and providing more training opportunities to ensure that all Marylanders can fully participate in the digital world.
