What's Happening?
Anduril Industries has announced a partnership with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to build autonomous surface vessels for the U.S. Navy's Modular Attack Surface Craft (MASC) program. The first prototype
will be constructed in Korea, with future vessels planned for production in the U.S. at the former Foss Shipyard in Seattle. This collaboration aims to address the Navy's need for hybrid fleet capabilities, combining large and medium unmanned surface vessel programs.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Anduril and HD Hyundai represents a strategic effort to enhance autonomous maritime capabilities for the U.S. Navy. By leveraging HD Hyundai's shipbuilding expertise, Anduril aims to produce autonomous vessels at scale, potentially transforming naval warfare and defense strategies. The collaboration also positions Anduril to supply autonomous ships to other countries, meeting the growing global demand for maritime capacity and innovative naval solutions.
What's Next?
Anduril and HD Hyundai will continue to develop and test the autonomous vessel prototype, with plans to expand production capabilities in the U.S. The partnership may lead to further collaborations and innovations in autonomous maritime technology, potentially influencing defense procurement and operational strategies. As the MASC program progresses, the companies will aim to secure contracts and deliver vessels that meet the Navy's requirements.
