What's Happening?
The Chytomo Awards, celebrating excellence in Ukrainian publishing, proceeded in Kyiv on January 29 despite a blackout caused by Russian drone attacks. The event utilized generators to maintain power, with participants traveling from across Ukraine and
abroad. The awards, first given in 2024, aim to spotlight the resilience of Ukrainian publishers amid ongoing conflict. This year, 82 applications were submitted, with winners selected in three main categories and a special award from the Frankfurt Book Fair. The International Renaissance Foundation partnered for the event, providing financial support to winners.
Why It's Important?
The continuation of the Chytomo Awards amidst challenging conditions underscores the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian publishing industry. By recognizing and supporting publishers who persist in their work despite adversity, the awards highlight the cultural and intellectual contributions of Ukraine to the global community. This event also draws international attention to the challenges faced by Ukrainian publishers, potentially attracting further support and collaboration from global partners.
