What's Happening?
Morrisons, a major UK supermarket chain, has announced its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. The company has set new emissions reduction targets, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative
(SBTi), aligning with the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C pathway. These targets include significant reductions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, with a focus on agriculture, land use, and end-of-life emissions. Morrisons aims to eliminate deforestation linked to primary commodities by 2025 and has already achieved a 22% reduction in total carbon emissions since 2019.
Why It's Important?
Morrisons' commitment to net-zero emissions is a significant step in the global retail sector's efforts to combat climate change. By setting science-based targets, the company is leading by example and encouraging other retailers to adopt similar sustainability practices. This move could influence U.S. retailers to enhance their environmental strategies, contributing to broader efforts to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainable supply chains. The focus on comprehensive value chain emissions highlights the importance of addressing both direct and indirect environmental impacts in achieving long-term sustainability goals.
