What's Happening?
A Chinese military court has sentenced two former defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, to suspended death sentences for bribery. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, Wei was found guilty of accepting bribes, while Li was guilty of both
accepting and offering bribes. These sentences are part of President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has been used to consolidate political loyalty and control among China's elite. The campaign has led to the removal of several high-ranking officials, including the highest-ranking general in January. Both Wei and Li were expelled from the Communist Party in 2024, sealing their fates. Li, who had faced U.S. sanctions over military purchases from Russia, was removed from office in October 2023.
Why It's Important?
The sentencing of these former defense ministers underscores the extent of President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign, which has significant implications for China's political landscape. By targeting high-ranking officials, Xi is not only addressing corruption but also reinforcing his control over the military and political elite. This move could further centralize power within the Chinese government, potentially affecting international relations and China's internal stability. The campaign's impact on U.S.-China relations is also notable, given Li's previous sanctions by the U.S. for military dealings with Russia.
