What's Happening?
A proposal has been put forward to develop 12 self-catered tourist accommodation units on the site of the former Milano Bars in St Ouen’s Bay. The site, which has been a car park since the demolition of the hotel and restaurant in 1996, is now owned by a local businessman. The proposed development aims to offer a lower intensity of use compared to the original plan, with a reduced maximum occupancy of 57 people and 24 parking spaces. The plan includes rewilding the site and supporting ecological enhancements. A public consultation is scheduled to gather feedback from local residents and stakeholders.
Why It's Important?
The development of self-catered units at the Milano Bars site could significantly impact local tourism by providing new accommodation options that align with Jersey's strategic tourism goals. The proposal emphasizes sustainability and reduced environmental impact, which could set a precedent for future developments in the area. The project also aims to enhance the local landscape and biodiversity, potentially increasing the site's appeal to environmentally conscious tourists. The reduced intensity of use could alleviate concerns about traffic and noise, benefiting local residents.
What's Next?
A public consultation will be held to gather input from local residents and stakeholders, which will inform the final proposal. The feedback from this consultation could influence the design and implementation of the project. The involvement of the Jersey Architecture Commission and the National Trust suggests that the development will be closely monitored to ensure it aligns with local planning policies and environmental standards.
