Nine PBS, a St. Louis-based Public Broadcasting Service affiliate, has filed a lawsuit against Iron Mountain Data Centers in Denver District Court to regain access to 50 terabytes of its historical data. The action comes after Nine PBS's cloud storage
provider, Open Source Storage (OSS), became unresponsive and effectively defunct. Nine PBS alleges that OSS utilized one of Iron Mountain's Denver data centers to store its extensive archive, which includes 70 years of TV shows, videos, and critical historical coverage, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, East St. Louis' history, and The Great Flood of 1993. The station asserts that much of this data, comprising over 11,000 files, is unique and irreplaceable. A judge initially blocked Iron Mountain from deleting or modifying the data and has now ruled that Iron Mountain must hand over the physical devices containing the data. Nine PBS is tasked with finding a third party, potentially a former OSS employee, to assist in retrieving the data within 30 days, ensuring no other OSS client data is shared or corrupted.
