Northshore Mining, a company based in Silver Bay, Minnesota, has been fined $19,000 by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) for repeatedly violating its environmental permit by dumping wastewater. Between 2023 and 2025, the company committed
11 unpermitted releases, including seven instances of releasing recycled water to the ground and four instances of releasing mining process water. The largest of these releases involved nearly 400,000 gallons of water. Northshore Mining has acknowledged that a small amount of recycled water may have reached the Beaver River. The company attributed these violations to equipment failures. In addition to the fine, the MPCA has mandated that Northshore Mining replace 8,000 feet of pipeline, submit a spill prevention report, and implement a piping integrity plan to prevent future unauthorized discharges.
