What's Happening?
Leonardo has introduced its AW159 virtual cockpit procedures trainer at the 2026 International Training Technology Exhibition and Conference (ITEC) in London. This concept demonstrator provides an immersive training environment using a head-mounted display,
haptic gloves, and a tracking device. The trainer replicates the cockpit of the AW159, allowing pilots to practice normal, malfunction, and emergency procedures without risk. The simulator is controlled by a tablet-hosted instructor station, enabling guided or self-paced training. It is designed for ab initio familiarization, currency maintenance, and check testing, and can be deployed on ships to maintain flight crew skills.
Why It's Important?
The AW159 virtual cockpit trainer represents a significant advancement in pilot training technology, offering a safe and effective way to practice critical procedures. By providing a realistic simulation environment, the trainer helps reduce the need for live aircraft, potentially lowering training costs and minimizing risks associated with real-world practice. This technology is particularly valuable for military and civilian aviation sectors, where maintaining pilot proficiency is crucial. The portability of the simulator allows for flexible training options, ensuring that pilots can continue their education regardless of location.
