What's Happening?
The Grafton Ferry, which connects the city of Grafton with St. Charles County across the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, will now operate year-round under new city ownership. Previously, the ferry operated seasonally from mid-April to mid-November. The city purchased
the ferry from the Calhoun County Ferry Co. for $878,000, funded by a $1.45 million grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The ferry will continue to be operated by the ferry company for the next 20 years, with fares and state funding covering future costs.
Why It's Important?
The year-round operation of the Grafton Ferry is expected to boost local tourism and economic activity, especially with the upcoming 100th anniversary of Route 66, which is anticipated to draw more visitors to the region. The ferry's extended service hours will provide greater convenience for residents and tourists, facilitating easier access to scenic routes and essential services. This development represents a significant achievement for Grafton under Mayor Mike Morrow's leadership, potentially leading to increased business opportunities and regional growth.
What's Next?
With the ferry now operating year-round, local businesses and tourism operators may see increased patronage, prompting potential expansions or new ventures. The city may also explore additional infrastructure improvements to support the anticipated rise in visitors. Monitoring the ferry's performance and economic impact will be crucial in assessing the success of this initiative and guiding future transportation and tourism strategies in the area.
