Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine and Princeton University have discovered how early-life stress can leave a lasting impact on the brain. The study found that stress during childhood alters the way brain cells package DNA, making
the brain's genetic stress response more easily activated. This change is linked to increased vulnerability to anxiety and depression in adulthood. The research focused on the ventral tegmental area of the brain, where dopamine-producing neurons are affected. The study identified an enzyme, SETD7, which is more abundant in stressed individuals and plays a role in making the brain more sensitive to stress.
