What's Happening?
FoodRecovery.org has received a $20,000 grant from the Bishop-Parker Foundation to enhance its 'Food Recovery Sustainability in Manatee' initiative. This funding will enable the organization to rescue more surplus food from local events and improve its technology
platform, facilitating connections between food donors and nonprofits serving families in need. The initiative aims to cover the entire county, rescuing an estimated 500+ pounds of food from at least 10 local events, thereby supporting approximately 415 families. The grant will also support technology improvements, making it easier for businesses to donate surplus food and for nonprofits to receive it.
Why It's Important?
This initiative addresses the critical issue of food insecurity in Manatee County, where over 55,000 individuals are affected. By rescuing surplus food, the program not only provides essential support to families in need but also reduces food waste from caterers, restaurants, and event planners. The grant's focus on technology improvements highlights the importance of efficient systems in maximizing the impact of food recovery efforts. This initiative serves as a model for other communities looking to tackle food insecurity and waste simultaneously.
What's Next?
With the grant in place, FoodRecovery.org will begin implementing its expanded food recovery efforts across Manatee County. The organization will likely collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits to optimize the food rescue process. As the initiative progresses, it may attract additional funding and partnerships, further enhancing its capacity to address food insecurity. The success of this program could inspire similar initiatives in other regions, promoting a more sustainable approach to food distribution and waste reduction.
