What's Happening?
MBDA is advancing its Spear Glide air-launched strike weapon, focusing on navigation and targeting algorithms. The system is undergoing front-end and warhead testing, aiming for integration onto aircraft like the F-35 and Eurofighter Typhoon. Spear Glide is designed for high-rate production with minimal reliance on bespoke subsystems, offering a competitive alternative to existing precision glide bombs. MBDA is seeking a customer partner to further develop the system, which is expected to be ready for contract award in two to three years.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Spear Glide weapon underscores the growing demand for cost-effective and versatile strike solutions in modern military operations. Its potential integration onto advanced aircraft like the F-35 could enhance strike capabilities and operational flexibility for U.S. and allied forces. This initiative reflects the strategic shift towards high-volume production and rapid deployment of advanced weaponry, influencing defense procurement and operational strategies in the U.S. and globally.
