What's Happening?
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Viasat India have announced an expansion of their collaboration to include satellite-based IoT solutions, focusing on commercial uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs). This initiative aims to enhance India's low-altitude
economy and promote Viasat's Velaris UAV service. The collaboration involves establishing a center of excellence at the Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT) in Jabalpur. This center will provide infrastructure and support for training programs targeting engineering students in IT, Electronics & Communication, and Computer Science. The training will include sessions and demonstrations of Viasat terminals. Viasat's Velaris service offers L-band connectivity for UAVs to operate beyond visual line of sight, crucial for commercial airspace operations.
Why It's Important?
The collaboration between BSNL and Viasat is significant as it addresses the growing demand for UAV technology in India, which is projected to expand substantially by 2030. By focusing on the low-altitude economy, the initiative aims to unlock new economic opportunities and drive growth in aerial operations below 3,000 meters. This development is expected to create a robust ecosystem supporting drones and advanced air mobility, contributing to economic development across the country. The training programs will equip a new generation of professionals with essential skills, fostering innovation and enabling new services for customers.
What's Next?
The establishment of the center of excellence at BRBRAITT is a key step in the collaboration, providing a platform for skill development and innovation in UAV technology. As the training programs commence, engineering students will gain hands-on experience with Viasat terminals, preparing them for careers in the emerging drone market. The commercialization of Viasat's Velaris UAV solutions will further enhance India's capabilities in aerial operations, potentially leading to new business opportunities and services. Stakeholders in the drone industry, including businesses and policymakers, are likely to monitor the progress of this initiative closely.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between BSNL and Viasat highlights the importance of international partnerships in advancing technology and economic growth. By leveraging satellite-based IoT solutions, the initiative addresses critical challenges in UAV operations, such as connectivity and safety. The focus on skill development underscores the need for a skilled workforce to support technological advancements. This development may also influence regulatory frameworks and policies related to UAV operations, as stakeholders seek to balance innovation with safety and security concerns.
