A new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that walking briskly for 30 minutes daily can significantly lower the risk of death in adults, even if they do not meet traditional daily step count goals. Researchers from Australia
and Spain analyzed data from approximately 70,000 adults aged 40 to 69. Participants were categorized by their daily step counts and their peak 30-minute cadence, which is the average steps per minute during their most active half-hour. The findings revealed that individuals taking fewer than 5,000 steps a day, a level typically considered sedentary, but maintaining a peak 30-minute cadence of 60 to 90 steps per minute, had a lower risk of death compared to those with a slower pace. Specifically, a peak cadence of 80 steps per minute in the under 5,000 steps group showed a similar death risk to those in the 5,000 to 7,500 steps per day group who walked at a slower pace (60 steps per minute). The lowest risk of death was observed in the group accumulating 7,500 to 10,000 steps daily, regardless of their walking intensity.
