What's Happening?
Kenya has officially launched the World Agriculture Forum (WAF) Country Council, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming the nation's agriculture sector. The launch event, held at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Auditorium in Nairobi,
brought together government officials, global agriculture leaders, and industry stakeholders. The council is set to focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and bioengineering to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen climate resilience, and connect global innovations with local farming practices. This initiative aligns with Kenya's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and the AI Strategy 2025-2030, aiming to deliver measurable outcomes such as increased yields and improved farmer incomes.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the WAF Country Council is significant as it positions Kenya as a leader in agricultural innovation on the continent. By leveraging AI and bioengineering, the council aims to address critical challenges such as climate change, trade barriers, and food security. This initiative is expected to enhance the resilience of Kenya's food systems, improve market access, and increase profitability for farmers. The council's focus on public-private partnerships and integrated investment pipelines could lead to socio-economic transformation, benefiting both local farmers and the broader agricultural sector.
What's Next?
The WAF Kenya Country Council plans to hold its first meeting within 30 days to establish technical working groups. These groups will work on aligning regulations, developing financing models, and creating safeguards to protect farmers while facilitating the adoption of AI and bioengineering solutions. By 2028, the council aims to establish a scalable model that connects global investors to local agricultural innovations, further strengthening Kenya's position as a hub for agri-tech convergence.
