Five individuals were rescued off the Gulf Coast of Mississippi after their fishing boat sank approximately 40 miles offshore. The rescue was facilitated by a personal locator beacon (PLB) that transmitted a distress signal to the Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided
Tracking (SARSAT) system. This system, partly developed by NASA, uses orbiting satellites to relay emergency signals containing the transmitter's location to ground stations, which then alert rescue coordination centers. In this incident, the signal led to the deployment of a Florida Coast Guard boat, which successfully rescued all five individuals after they spent four hours in the water. One survivor, Easton Barrett, has since advocated for the use of PLBs, emphasizing their critical role in survival situations where cellular service is unavailable. The PLB used was a registered ResQLink device from ACR Electronics Inc., which also notifies the device owner's emergency contact upon activation.
