A randomized clinical trial published in Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica suggests that structured strength training during pregnancy may help reduce the risk of gestational diabetes and enhance
maternal well-being. The study involved 209 pregnant women who were overweight or had obesity, assigning them to either a strength training program or standard prenatal care. Participants in the strength training group engaged in weekly supervised sessions and home workouts, encouraged to train three times a week using light weights or resistance bands from weeks 12-14 until week 36 or delivery. While the overall difference in gestational diabetes rates between the exercise group (2%) and the control group (7.3%) was not statistically significant, an exploratory subgroup of women who consistently exercised at least twice a week showed no development of gestational diabetes. Crucially, the exercise regimen did not increase the risk of complications such as preterm birth or miscarriage, with similar rates observed in both groups. Women in the strength training group also reported significantly better quality of life and fewer pregnancy symptoms, including reduced anxiety, tiredness, and back or pelvic pain.
