What's Happening?
Dexcom, Inc. has announced the results of its CONNECT randomized controlled trial, which demonstrates the significant benefits of using the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system for individuals with Type 2 diabetes who are not using insulin.
The study, presented at the 2026 Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association, showed that participants using the Dexcom G7 experienced a clinically and statistically significant reduction in HbA1c levels and improved glucose control compared to those using traditional self-monitoring methods. The trial involved 283 participants across 22 primary care practices in the United States, with 265 completing the 26-week study. Key outcomes included an average 1.6% reduction in HbA1c levels for those using the Dexcom G7, with significant improvements in time spent within the target glucose range.
Why It's Important?
The findings from the CONNECT study are poised to influence the standard of care for managing Type 2 diabetes in patients not using insulin. By demonstrating the effectiveness of CGM systems like the Dexcom G7, the study supports broader adoption of this technology, which could lead to better health outcomes for millions of Americans living with Type 2 diabetes. The reduction in HbA1c levels and improved glucose control can decrease the risk of diabetes-related complications, potentially reducing healthcare costs and improving quality of life for patients. The study's results may also encourage healthcare providers to integrate CGM systems into treatment plans, offering a more proactive approach to diabetes management.
What's Next?
A six-month extension phase of the CONNECT trial is currently underway to assess the long-term benefits of the Dexcom G7 system. This phase will provide additional data on the sustainability of the observed improvements in glucose control over a 12-month period. The outcomes of this extension could further solidify the role of CGM systems in managing Type 2 diabetes and influence future guidelines and recommendations from diabetes associations. As the healthcare industry continues to prioritize personalized and technology-driven solutions, the success of the CONNECT study may lead to increased investment in CGM technology and its integration into broader diabetes care strategies.
