The National Fire Authority (NFA) is actively working to increase female participation within its workforce by addressing infrastructure and workplace challenges traditionally associated with male-dominated services. Acting Chief Executive Joel Israel
announced that the NFA has implemented an open merit policy, which has resulted in a noticeable increase in female staff across various levels of the organization. Recent infrastructure upgrades include the addition of female restrooms and separate dormitories at fire stations in Navua, Lami, and Nakasi, as well as newly designed stations equipped with female utilities. These changes are part of a broader evolution over the past five to ten years aimed at balancing gender representation in both operational and corporate services, with corporate staffing now approaching a 50-50 gender split.
