A German research consortium has developed a six-axis robot arm capable of welding steel underwater without the need for human divers. The system, part of the MARIOW project, uses an AI camera to identify weld joints and a continuous wire feeding process
to maintain a steady arc, eliminating the need for frequent electrode changes. This innovation addresses the high fatality rates associated with underwater welding, which is one of the most dangerous jobs due to risks like electric shock and explosive gas. The demonstration took place in a controlled saltwater test tank, showcasing the potential for commercial application.
