What's Happening?
A three-day international conference titled 'Sustainable Innovations in Agriculture, Veterinary and Agro-related Matters' was inaugurated at the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Raichur. The event, coordinated by the National Agricultural Development
Cooperative Limited (NADCL) from Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, aims to address the development of agriculture, livestock, and related fields. Srinivasa Rao, Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, emphasized the need for agricultural universities and scientists to collaborate in solving issues faced by farmers, particularly those arising from natural disasters and market challenges. He highlighted the significant food wastage in India, valued at ₹1.3 lakh crore annually, and urged universities to find solutions. The conference also showcased UAS Raichur's achievements, including its biological production unit's role in managing black thrips affecting chillis and the production of 22,000 quintals of seeds for farmers.
Why It's Important?
The conference underscores the critical role of academic and scientific collaboration in addressing agricultural challenges. By focusing on sustainable innovations, the event aims to enhance the resilience of farmers against natural and market adversities. The emphasis on reducing food wastage aligns with broader efforts to improve food security and economic efficiency in agriculture. The initiatives discussed, such as the establishment of a value-added park for cereals, could significantly benefit small and micro-grain growers, potentially leading to increased agricultural productivity and economic stability in rural areas.
