A study conducted by Tampere University researchers, published in Aging Cell, indicates that traditional and easily measurable disease risk factors, such as Body Mass Index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio, smoking, and alcohol consumption, are more effective
predictors of future non-communicable disease morbidity than epigenetic clocks. Epigenetic clocks are designed to estimate biological age by capturing bodily changes over time and are widely used in aging research, with some marketed directly to consumers for personal health assessment. The research analyzed data from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study (LASERI), a longitudinal study initiated in 1980, involving 1,108 participants aged 34-49 who were free of chronic diseases at the study's outset and followed for 7-9 years. The findings suggest that a statistical model incorporating these traditional factors provided a more accurate prediction of chronic disease onset compared to any of the analyzed epigenetic clocks.
