The United States has seen a significant increase in tick-bite-related emergency department visits this year, with August recording the highest rate since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began tracking data in 2017. As of August 23,
there were 34 tick-bite visits for every 100,000 emergency department visits nationwide, following a record-setting April. This trend is particularly pronounced in Pennsylvania, where blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, are present in all 67 counties, and health officials have noted an increase in tick-bite-related emergency department visits across nearly all regions. Ticks are most active from April through August and again in October and November, remaining active during winter whenever temperatures rise above freezing. The geographic risk of tick-borne diseases is also expanding, with a recent CDC report identifying blacklegged ticks and disease-causing pathogens in western North Carolina, indicating the establishment of Lyme disease in parts of the southern Appalachians.

The surge in tick-borne illnesses poses a growing public health challenge across the U.S., impacting healthcare systems and individual well-being. Lyme disease, for instance, is one of Pennsylvania's most commonly reported infectious diseases, with an estimated 100,000 annual cases, many of which go unreported. Beyond Lyme disease, ticks can transmit other serious illnesses, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan virus. Bites from the Lone Star tick have also been linked to alpha-gal syndrome, a red meat allergy. The expanding geographic range of ticks means that more communities are becoming vulnerable to these diseases, necessitating increased public awareness and preventive measures. The economic burden includes direct healthcare costs for treatment and indirect costs from lost productivity due to illness. The potential for co-infections, where a single tick bite transmits multiple diseases, further complicates diagnosis and treatment, potentially leading to more severe symptoms and underreporting of specific illnesses like anaplasmosis.

As another active period for adult blacklegged ticks approaches in October and November, health officials are emphasizing preventive measures. Recommendations include using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants in wooded or brushy areas, and conducting thorough checks of people, pets, and clothing after outdoor activities. Showering within two hours of coming indoors can also reduce the risk of Lyme disease. Around homes, removing brush and tall grass is advised to reduce tick habitats. Research is ongoing for human vaccines, with Pfizer and Valneva in phase three testing for a Lyme disease vaccine, potentially available by 2027. Additionally, programs are underway to orally vaccinate mice to prevent Lyme disease at its source. Continued public education campaigns and the development of more effective prevention and treatment strategies will be crucial in mitigating the impact of expanding tick populations and associated diseases.

The development of new vaccines and targeted interventions, such as oral vaccines for wildlife, represents a proactive approach to disease control, aiming to disrupt the transmission cycle at its source. This situation also brings into focus the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and environmental health, emphasizing the need for a 'One Health' approach to address emerging infectious disease threats.
