What's Happening?
The University of South Carolina (UofSC) is set to introduce a new Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design (B.S.I.D.) degree program, with its inaugural class expected in Fall 2027. This initiative, driven by the university president, aims to complement
the existing Industrial Engineering degree within the Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing. The new program, housed in the School of Visual Art and Design (SVAD) in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences, will occupy a nearly 3900 sq ft makerspace, complete with three faculty offices. This makerspace will be supported by nearby wood and metal shops and a ceramics studio. The university is actively recruiting faculty for this program, including two full-time, nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor positions and a tenured Associate/Full Professor to serve as the Inaugural Head of the Industrial Design Program, all starting in August 2027. The curriculum for the B.S.I.D. program is already in place.
