What's Happening?
Delaware has received a grant to explore the potential expansion of passenger rail services in its southern communities. The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is undertaking a study, known as the Diamond State Line study, to determine the feasibility
of providing an additional transportation option across the Delmarva Peninsula. Many communities in this region currently lack direct access to interstate highways or existing passenger rail services. The study aims to assess how passenger rail could improve connections to essential services such as housing, schools, medical facilities, and shopping, while also offering more transportation choices for historically underserved populations. Additionally, the proposed rail line could benefit communities that experience significant population increases during the summer tourism season. DelDOT has already completed several initial tasks for Step 1 of the project, including developing a project management plan, conducting an informational workshop, and submitting a proposed statement of work, budget, and schedule for Step 2.
