A recent review highlights the critical need for cancer patients to have a more significant role in the development and implementation of generative AI in oncology. The study, published in the European Journal of Cancer, found that out of 2,441 records,
only 32 studies examined the perspectives of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers regarding generative AI in their care. While patients generally favored AI when it improved accessibility and readability of health information, most research focused on providing information or simplifying clinical reports, leaving many other potential uses unexplored. Associate Professor Ashley Hopkins from Flinders University emphasizes that gaining patient perspectives can inform better interface design, patient education, consent processes, workflow integration, governance, monitoring, and feedback mechanisms for AI tools in oncology. Dr. Bradley Menz, a research fellow at Flinders University, further states that designing AI for patients is not the same as designing it with them, underscoring the importance of patient involvement in shaping how these tools are designed, governed, and used.
