What's Happening?
The Homewood Village Board has granted a special use permit to Darshawn Hunter and Quanteisha Carter of Q and T Elegant Affairs, allowing them to operate an event center at 18027 Dixie Highway. This decision, made on June 23, enables the business to establish
a permanent location in a 1,875-square-foot space within the B-2 Downtown Transition zoning district. The venue, which shares a building with Woori Taekwondo, is designed to host a variety of events, including baby and bridal showers, family celebrations, meetings, and children's events. The business, operational since 2018, plans to focus significantly on children's events. Events are expected to occur one per evening, lasting four to five hours, including setup and teardown, and will be scheduled for both weekday evenings and weekends. Due to the lack of on-site parking, the business will utilize nearby public parking lots and street parking. Security measures, including cameras and optional security personnel, will be implemented.
Why It's Important?
The approval of this event center is significant for the local economy and community development in Homewood. By providing a dedicated space for various gatherings, the center is expected to attract more visitors to the downtown area, potentially boosting local businesses. The focus on children's events could also foster a family-friendly environment, enhancing community engagement. However, the reliance on public parking and the need for a liquor license could pose challenges. The absence of a specific liquor license classification for event centers in Homewood may require regulatory adjustments. Additionally, the scheduling of events to minimize traffic impact reflects a proactive approach to integrating the center into the community without disrupting existing activities.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the submission of a parking management plan by the applicants, demonstrating how parking will be managed during large events. This plan must be approved before a building permit or business operation certificate is issued. The business may also seek a liquor license, which would require further discussions with the village, as Homewood currently lacks a specific classification for event centers. The implementation of security measures and the scheduling of events to avoid major downtown activities will be crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of the center and maintaining community support.
