Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labor. This follows his conviction, along with Akonta Mining Company Limited, on six
counts related to illegal mining activities in Samreboi, Western Region. The court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie Tay, found Wontumi and his company guilty of unlawfully assigning mineral rights and facilitating unlicensed mining operations. The prosecution argued that Wontumi allowed mining activities without the necessary ministerial approval, violating the Minerals and Mining Act. The case was initiated after a police operation in April 2025, which led to the arrest of 29 suspects and the seizure of mining equipment and cash.
