What's Happening?
Flying Over Time has launched the Spirit99 initiative, a comprehensive youth aviation program aimed at preparing the next generation for careers in aerospace. This initiative builds on the legacy of Donald
A. Hall, Sr., the Chief Engineer of the Spirit of St. Louis, by providing hands-on drone training and S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programs. The program seeks to address workforce shortages and lack of diversity in aviation by inspiring students, particularly girls and underrepresented minorities, to pursue technical fields.
Why It's Important?
The Spirit99 initiative is significant as it addresses critical challenges in the aerospace industry, such as workforce shortages and diversity gaps. By providing educational opportunities and career pathways, the program aims to inspire a new generation of aerospace professionals. This is particularly important as the industry faces a projected need for 80,000 pilots and 600,000 aerospace workers by 2030. The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to promote S.T.E.A.M. education and create a more inclusive workforce.
What's Next?
The Spirit99 initiative will kick off with a gala event in Santa Monica, California, followed by a series of community events in cities historically tied to the Spirit of St. Louis flight. These events will combine historical commemoration with local youth programming and scholarship announcements. The initiative will culminate in a centennial celebration in 2027, marking 100 years since the historic flight. This series of events is expected to generate significant media attention and foster partnerships with corporate sponsors and philanthropic investors.
