What's Happening?
Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) is preparing for the commissioning of the 500MW Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant by December 2027. To ensure operational readiness, PETROS has trained
76 Sarawakian operations and maintenance technicians through on-the-job training (OJT) with regional power industry partners. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad, Malakoff Power Berhad, and PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) Indonesia Power, aims to build long-term local expertise for the upcoming power facility. PETROS Vice President for Capital Projects, Kidd Enau, emphasized the importance of this development in meeting the growing energy demand driven by new and emerging industries. The training equips the workforce with skills for safe and efficient plant operations, contributing to Sarawak's sustainable progress.
Why It's Important?
The initiative by PETROS to train local technicians is crucial for Sarawak's energy sector, as it ensures the safe and efficient operation of the Miri CCGT power plant. By developing local expertise, PETROS is maximizing local participation in critical energy projects, which is expected to create greater employment opportunities and contribute to Sarawak's long-term economic growth. This move aligns with the state's strategy to harness local resources for sustainable development, positioning Sarawak to meet increasing energy demands and support emerging industries. The focus on local talent development also enhances technical competencies, preparing Sarawakians to manage and sustain critical energy infrastructure.
What's Next?
PETROS plans to continue its talent development initiatives, with eight engineers scheduled to complete the PowerGen Maintenance Excellence programme and nine engineers set to finish the Shadowing & Oversight Major Overhaul Inspection (SOMI) programme by December 2025. These programs are designed to further enhance the technical skills of the workforce, ensuring readiness for the Miri CCGT commissioning. As the commissioning date approaches, PETROS is expected to maintain its strategic partnerships and investment in human capital, fostering a skilled workforce capable of supporting Sarawak's energy infrastructure and economic growth.
Beyond the Headlines
The focus on local workforce development by PETROS highlights a broader trend of regional empowerment and self-sufficiency in energy projects. By investing in local talent, PETROS is not only addressing immediate operational needs but also contributing to the cultural and economic empowerment of Sarawak. This approach may serve as a model for other regions seeking to balance resource utilization with sustainable development and local capacity building.
