What's Happening?
The Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program, a $10.5 billion initiative aimed at modernizing the national electric grid. This program is designed to enhance grid resilience, expand capacity,
and deploy smart grid technologies across the United States. Administered by the Office of Electricity, the GRIP program focuses on improving the flexibility and reliability of the grid to ensure communities have access to affordable and secure power, even as extreme weather events and rising demand pose increasing challenges. The program has already announced $7.6 billion in funding for 105 projects across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These projects emphasize field-deployable solutions such as advanced conductors, reclosers, feeder automation, and modern protection and control systems. The initiative also prioritizes enhanced situational awareness through technologies like synchrophasors, which improve system visibility and coordination across regions.
