What's Happening?
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has commenced construction on a significant renewable energy project valued at Dh22bn ($5.99bn). This initiative includes a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic power plant integrated with a 19GWh advanced battery storage system. The project,
developed by Masdar in collaboration with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), aims to deliver 1GW of clean, continuous baseload power at a competitive tariff. The foundation stone was laid by Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Martyrs’ Affairs. The project is anticipated to be the world's largest solar and battery storage project, marking a pivotal moment for the renewable energy sector. Upon completion in 2027, it is expected to offset 5.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually and create over 10,000 jobs.
