What's Happening?
Eutelsat has announced a partnership with Airtel Gabon to provide OneWeb LEO satellite connectivity to passenger trains in Gabon. This initiative aims to support on-board Wi-Fi services as part of a national effort led by the Gabonese Ministry of Digital
Economy, Digitalization and Innovation, and the Ministry of Transport. The project is in collaboration with the Transgabon Railway Operating Company (SETRAG). The deployment extends Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO services in Africa, enhancing digital services in public transportation and modernizing the railway experience. The initiative is expected to improve passenger comfort and provide reliable broadband services along long-distance routes beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it represents a step forward in integrating digital services into public transportation in Africa, particularly in Gabon. By enhancing connectivity on trains, the project supports the modernization of the railway system, potentially increasing passenger satisfaction and operational efficiency. The initiative also reflects Eutelsat's strategy to expand its digital infrastructure footprint in Africa, which could lead to further economic development and technological advancement in the region. The partnership with Airtel Gabon and the involvement of national ministries highlight a collaborative approach to infrastructure development, which could serve as a model for similar projects across the continent.
