What's Happening?
APG Federal Credit Union (APGFCU) mobilized over 65 employees and their family members for a month-long volunteer effort during Hunger Action Month in September. These volunteers participated in various activities across Baltimore City and Baltimore,
Harford, and Cecil counties in Maryland. Their efforts included preparing and serving meals, packing meal boxes for students and seniors, and organizing pantry items for distribution to school pantries. In addition to the volunteer work, APGFCU’s Community Impact Committee donated $10,000 to the Baltimore Hunger Project. This donation aims to expand the organization’s pantry program in schools, thereby increasing the amount of food provided to each school pantry.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant because it directly addresses the pressing issue of food insecurity within Maryland communities. By combining financial contributions with hands-on volunteerism, APGFCU demonstrates a comprehensive approach to community support. The expansion of school pantry programs, facilitated by the $10,000 donation, is crucial for ensuring that students have access to nutritious food, which can positively impact their academic performance and overall well-being. The involvement of employees and their families also fosters a sense of community responsibility and highlights the credit union's commitment to its local service areas. This effort helps to alleviate immediate hunger and contributes to the long-term goal of building more food-secure communities.
What's Next?
APGFCU's Hunger Action Month efforts are part of an ongoing commitment to community engagement and fighting food insecurity. The $10,000 donation to the Baltimore Hunger Project will be utilized to expand school pantry programs, which will likely lead to increased food distribution to students in need. The credit union's leadership, as stated by Bre Hill, Director of Community Impact, indicates a continued focus on addressing issues that matter deeply to their employees and the communities they serve. Future initiatives may include further volunteer opportunities and financial support for local charities dedicated to hunger relief, building on the momentum generated during Hunger Action Month.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate impact of providing meals and financial aid, APGFCU's actions reflect a growing trend of corporate social responsibility where businesses integrate community welfare into their core values. The emphasis on employee surveys to identify issues like food insecurity suggests a bottom-up approach to corporate giving, empowering employees to shape the company's philanthropic efforts. This not only boosts employee morale and engagement but also ensures that resources are directed towards causes that resonate deeply within the organization. Such initiatives can foster stronger ties between businesses and their communities, building trust and demonstrating a commitment that extends beyond financial transactions to genuine social impact.
