What's Happening?
The University of Rhode Island (URI) is actively involved in Camp Surefire, a sleepaway summer camp for children aged 7 to 17 with Type 1 diabetes, located at Camp JORI in South Kingstown. URI health sciences, pharmacy, and nursing students, along with faculty,
provide 24-hour medical supervision, ensuring campers' blood sugar levels are continuously monitored and managed. Campers use Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) and report their levels via a phone app, which digitally transmits the data to a large video board for real-time monitoring by medical staff. This system allows children with Type 1 diabetes to experience traditional summer camp activities like swimming and kayaking while their health is closely tracked. The medical team, including URI student nurses and pharmacists, is trained to operate CGMs, insulin pumps, and glucometers, and to respond to blood sugar fluctuations. Robyn Perry, lead dietitian for the camp and a URI clinical instructor, emphasizes the delicate balance of managing insulin intake based on carbohydrate counts, especially with diverse dietary needs among campers.
