What's Happening?
The New York City Department of Records & Information Services (DORIS) has launched an online exhibit titled 'NYC’s Story: The City on Record.' This exhibit features over 100 items from the city's archival and library collections, showcasing 400 years
of NYC history. The exhibit includes documents from land transfers in 17th-century Queens to a 2025 primary election ballot. It aims to celebrate the city's history during the 250th anniversary of the United States founding, categorizing records by questions about New Yorkers, the city's construction, and its unique identity.
Why It's Important?
This exhibit provides a comprehensive look at the historical evolution of New York City, offering insights into the diverse population and the city's development over centuries. By making these records accessible online, DORIS allows a wider audience to engage with the city's rich history, fostering a deeper understanding of the cultural and social dynamics that have shaped NYC. This initiative not only preserves historical documents but also encourages public interaction with the city's past, potentially influencing future urban planning and cultural preservation efforts.
