What's Happening?
Base Power, a battery manufacturing startup founded by Zach Dell, has moved into the former Austin American-Statesman building in downtown Austin. The company plans to use the 55,000-square-foot facility
as a temporary site to bring battery production back in-house. This move aligns with the building owners' search for a short-term tenant, as they await the resolution of lawsuits that have stalled redevelopment plans. Base Power has already begun testing machinery and aims to achieve full production soon, employing 20 full-time workers with plans to hire up to 150 more.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of Base Power's temporary factory in Austin represents a significant step in the company's growth and operational strategy. By bringing production in-house, the startup can better control quality and scale its operations. This move also contributes to the local economy by creating jobs and utilizing a historic building that was otherwise vacant. As Base Power continues to expand, its presence in Austin could bolster the city's reputation as a hub for innovation and technology, attracting further investment and development in the region.
What's Next?
Base Power plans to use the former newspaper building for up to two years while determining the location and scale of a permanent factory. The company has secured substantial funding, which will support its expansion efforts. As the startup progresses, it will likely explore options for a long-term facility that can accommodate its growing workforce and production needs. The resolution of the lawsuits concerning the building's redevelopment may also impact Base Power's future plans and operations.
