What's Happening?
The COP30 Presidency and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have launched the implementation phase of the Global Mutirão Against Extreme Heat, also known as Beat the Heat. This initiative
aims to accelerate sustainable cooling and heat-resilience solutions in cities worldwide. As part of the Global Cooling Pledge, 72 countries have committed to reducing cooling-related emissions by 68% by 2050. The initiative seeks to address the growing demand for cooling, which is expected to triple by 2050, by promoting environmentally sound solutions and protecting vulnerable populations from rising heat.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the Global Mutirão Against Extreme Heat is crucial in addressing the impacts of climate change, particularly in urban areas where extreme heat poses significant risks. By reducing cooling-related emissions and expanding access to sustainable cooling, the initiative aims to mitigate the effects of climate change and improve public health. The focus on sustainable cooling solutions is expected to save up to USD 43 trillion in avoided electricity and infrastructure costs by 2050. This initiative highlights the importance of international collaboration in tackling climate challenges and promoting social justice.
What's Next?
The initiative will focus on capacity building and concrete actions to implement sustainable cooling solutions. Cities and the private sector are expected to play a key role in expanding the initiative. As more cities join the Global Mutirão Against Extreme Heat, the initiative aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of multilateral climate agreements. The success of this initiative could lead to further international cooperation and the development of innovative technologies to combat extreme heat.
