What's Happening?
Rockhampton Regional Council, through its economic development arm Advance Rockhampton, is spearheading several initiatives to bolster the agricultural sector in the region. These efforts include the completion
of the Making Water Work – Reef Water Quality Project, which aids landholders in managing runoff to protect water quality. The council is also involved in the South Yaamba Irrigation Development Business Case, which aims to unlock over 1,000 hectares for new irrigation. Additionally, partnerships with local councils and universities are fostering new supply chains and strengthening the local food manufacturing workforce.
Why It's Important?
These initiatives are crucial for the economic growth and sustainability of the Rockhampton region. By improving water management and expanding irrigation, the council is enhancing agricultural productivity and environmental protection. The focus on sustainable farming and local food manufacturing not only supports the local economy but also positions the region as a leader in agricultural innovation. This could lead to increased investment, job creation, and a more resilient agricultural sector, benefiting local communities and the broader economy.
