What's Happening?
Buckingham Palace is currently hosting the largest exhibition of Queen Elizabeth II's fashion, titled 'Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style.' The exhibition, which runs until October 18 at The King’s Gallery, showcases over 300 items, many of which are
being displayed for the first time. These include personal items from the queen's childhood, such as baby bonnets, and iconic pieces like a Lanvin gold lamé dress and jewel-toned velvet coats by Norman Hartnell. Curated by Caroline de Guitaut, the exhibition offers a comprehensive view of the queen's relationship with fashion throughout her life, highlighting her influence on style and her personal preferences. The exhibition also marks the official transfer of the monarch's fashion archive to the Royal Collection.
Why It's Important?
The exhibition provides a unique insight into the personal and public life of Queen Elizabeth II, showcasing how she used fashion as a form of communication and diplomacy. By displaying her wardrobe choices, the exhibition highlights the queen's role in shaping British fashion and her influence on global style trends. The transfer of her fashion archive to the Royal Collection ensures the preservation of these historical pieces, allowing future generations to study and appreciate the queen's impact on fashion. This exhibition not only celebrates the centenary of her birth but also underscores the cultural significance of her style choices.
