NJ Transit is implementing significant technology upgrades across its bus fleet, aiming to improve real-time location data and passenger experience. Over 1,500 buses currently feature new computer equipment, advanced antennas for more precise GPS tracking,
and free Wi-Fi. This initiative is projected to expand to nearly 2,000 buses by the end of 2026. The enhanced GPS hardware and antennas are designed to provide more accurate bus arrival predictions, which will be accessible to customers through the NJ Transit website, mobile app, station signage, and various third-party applications starting in October. Additionally, NJ Transit is piloting new high-tech bus stop signs equipped with digital screens that display real-time arrival information, detours, delays, service alerts, and bus occupancy levels. These solar-powered signs, from infrastructure provider BusPas, are ADA-compliant, feature e-paper displays, and include text-to-speech announcement capabilities and automated safety lighting.
