What's Happening?
AmeriCorps programs, Reading Corps and Math Corps, are actively recruiting tutors across the United States to address significant gaps in student proficiency in reading and mathematics. A recent Kids Count
Data Book, released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in June, revealed that only 31% of fourth graders nationwide are proficient in reading, and just 37% of eighth graders are proficient in math. To combat these low proficiency rates, these evidence-based programs place tutors in local schools to provide targeted, small-group instruction and skill-building exercises. The goal is to offer additional support that helps students make faster progress and achieve greater gains in these critical subjects. Building on successful models in Minnesota, these high-impact tutoring programs have expanded nationally, having already assisted over 550,000 students in improving their learning outcomes.
