What's Happening?
The Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MND) announced on October 27, 2026, that it has signed a contract valued at approximately RON326.5 million (USD67.95 million) with Thales for the acquisition of four mobile approach and landing radar systems.
These systems are slated for delivery to four Romanian Air Force locations in stages, commencing in 2028 and concluding by 2030. The contract was signed by the Romanian MND's General Directorate for Armaments with Thales, including Thales Romania and Thales LAS France. Thales has identified the systems as ground controlled approach radar systems, which will provide target data to both national and NATO command and control (C2) systems, ensuring 24/7 operation in all weather conditions. The new radars are also designed to guide aircraft during approach and landing, even in challenging electromagnetic environments. Their deployable configuration will reduce reliance on fixed air base infrastructure, allowing for their use at alternative locations.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition significantly enhances Romania's air defense capabilities and its contribution to NATO's collective security. The mobile approach and landing radar systems provide critical infrastructure for safe and efficient air traffic management, particularly in military operations. The ability to operate in hostile electromagnetic environments and from alternative locations increases the resilience and flexibility of Romania's air force. For the U.S. and NATO, this investment means a stronger ally with improved command and control integration, facilitating joint operations and enhancing regional stability. The advanced radar technology ensures precise guidance for aircraft, which is vital for both routine operations and rapid deployment scenarios. This modernization effort underscores Romania's commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture and its role in the broader transatlantic security framework, impacting strategic military planning and operational effectiveness in Eastern Europe.
What's Next?
The delivery of the four mobile approach and landing radar systems will occur in stages between 2028 and 2030. While the Romanian MND did not specify the exact models, Thales confirmed that the contract includes the STAR NG (Solid-state Approach Radar – Next Generation) primary surveillance radar and the RSM NG (next-generation monopulse secondary surveillance radar)/IFF (identification friend or foe) secondary surveillance and identification system. Additionally, Thales will install four Precision Approach Radars (PARs) to ensure accurate control for all types of aircraft during approach and landing. These systems will be integrated into existing national and NATO C2 networks, further streamlining communication and coordination. The deployable nature of these radars suggests a future where air base infrastructure can be more adaptable and less vulnerable, potentially influencing NATO's broader strategy for air defense and rapid response capabilities in the region.
