What's Happening?
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers to serve as campground hosts at several state parks and historic sites for the 2026 season. The program is looking for hosts at Sangchris Lake State Park, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic
Site, and Horseshoe Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area. Campground hosts are responsible for greeting visitors, managing arrivals and departures, issuing camping permits, and providing information about park facilities and local attractions. In exchange for their services, hosts receive free camping accommodations in their own RVs or trailers at designated sites.
Why It's Important?
The campground host program is vital for maintaining the quality of visitor experiences at Illinois state parks. By recruiting volunteers, the program ensures that visitors receive a warm welcome and have access to knowledgeable individuals who can enhance their stay. This initiative also supports the parks' operations by providing essential services without incurring additional staffing costs. The program fosters a sense of community and stewardship among volunteers, who play a crucial role in promoting conservation and outdoor recreation. Additionally, the opportunity for free camping can attract a diverse group of volunteers, enriching the cultural and social fabric of the parks.
