What's Happening?
The Boston Bruins hosted Hockey Fights Cancer Night at TD Garden on October 23, during their game against the Anaheim Ducks. The event, presented by Mass General Brigham, incorporated lavender, a color symbolizing cancer awareness, into various aspects
of the game. Bruins coaches and broadcasters wore lavender pins, and fans were encouraged to fill out 'I Fight For' cards to honor those affected by cancer. Emma Robertson, a 15-year-old cancer patient, performed the ceremonial puck drop. The Bruins Foundation made a $100,000 donation to name a patient room at Mass General Brigham for Children, featuring a Bruins-themed mural. Additionally, the Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to Zip With Us®, a nonprofit providing adaptive clothing for medically complex children. An online auction for autographed Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys was held, benefiting the Foundation.
Why It's Important?
Hockey Fights Cancer Night is significant as it raises awareness and funds for cancer research and treatment. The event highlights the Bruins' commitment to supporting cancer patients, particularly children, through donations and community engagement. The $100,000 donation to Mass General Brigham for Children and the grant to Zip With Us® demonstrate the team's dedication to improving the lives of pediatric patients. The auction and raffles provide fans with an opportunity to contribute to cancer-related causes, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. This initiative not only supports cancer patients but also strengthens the Bruins' relationship with their fans and the local community.
What's Next?
The Bruins Foundation will continue its efforts to support cancer research and treatment through ongoing fundraising activities. The online auction for autographed jerseys will conclude on October 30, providing additional funds for the Foundation's initiatives. The Foundation will also present a check for $326,542 to the Pan-Mass Challenge, supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Future events and partnerships are likely to focus on expanding support for cancer patients and their families, enhancing the impact of the Bruins' community outreach programs.
